The mezzo-soprano was born in Rosenheim, Germany.

She studied voice first at the university of music in Augsburg with Edith Wiens and completed her studies at the university Mozarteum in Salzburg with KS Elisabeth Wilke and Helmut Deutsch.

She has also had the privilege to have sung in Masterclasses with such notable singers and teachers as Rudolf Jansen, Udo Reinemann, Irwin Gage, Frieder Bernius, Dalton Baldwin, Hedwig Fassbender and Claudia Eder.

On stage Sonja Bühling has sung roles like Louise in „Die Opernprobe“ (Lortzing), Nadeshda Durowa in „Die Kavalleristin“ (de Wit), Lisetta in „Die Welt auf dem Monde“ (Haydn), Madame Ruthal in „Die lustigen Weiber aus Windsor“ (Dittersdorf), Marcellina in „Le nozze di Figaro“ (Mozart), Annio in „La clemenza di Tito“ (Mozart), Hänsel in „Hänsel und Gretel“ (Humperdinck), Mercedes in „Carmen“ (Bizet), Elfe in „Ein Sommernachtstraum“ (Shakespeare/ Mendelssohn) with the Mozarteum Orchestra under the baton of Ivor Bolton, and Klementia in „Sancta Susanna“ (Hindemith).

From early on the mezzo-soprano has regularly been a soloist in performances of sacred music and recitals (a.o. “Brucknerhaus Linz”, “Wiener Konzerthaus”, Rokokosaal Augsburg) and worked with notable conductors like Josef Wallnig, August Haltmayer, Hans Graf, Helmuth Rilling (Stuttgarter Bachwoche) and quite recently Stefan Vladar.
